Another Biology Lesson Success
Another day in the land of Homeschooling draws to a close. I’ll make it quick tonight, Jules and Sin are drawing at the dining room table, while they wait for their hotwater bottles for bedtime. John is kindly washing up the dinner dishes. (John if you read this: Thank you my Love, I appreciate you!)
We started school this morning with a quick phonics lesson for Jules, introducing the long ooo sound, today we did, ew as in chew. She did a worksheet filling in the ew part of the words, and drawing a few pics. Then a small but I thought quite difficult crossword puzzle, using only words with ew in them. She’s reallyenjoying wordsearch and crossword puzzles.
StJohn did a few shape recognition worksheets. I think he’s getting bored as they’re a bit easy for him. I’m going to have to magically come up with something exciting soon!
Then we got stuck into our Biology lesson. Today it was the digestive system. First I explained to them the passage of food from entry to exit. Juliette was given a diagram to label. (I’d drawn the diagram on the blackboard and labelled it.)
Then came the practical homeschooling trick. How was I going to get them to undrestand where on their body their digestive system was? It came to me late last night…andI tried it this morning.
I crushed some ice, quite finely, and gave them each a teaspoon full to swallow after I’d explained the passage of food. They were then able to feel, the ice as it made it’s way down into their stomachs. From the look on their faces they got it! It was no longer just a diagram, it was an important part of their own bodies.
Almost immediately they asked for Hot chocolate as they where chilly. I made it for them, and as they drank it, I watched quietly from the kitchen, how they chatted about it’s passage through their bodies. Asking each other, “can you feel it, where’s yours now?”. Practical Homeschooling works!!!
We then tackled a bit more multiplication and then took the rest of the day off.
Again 2 friends of Juliette’s popped in for a play this afternoon. This socialisation thing, it’s a worry, could my homeschooled children be, possibly, over-socialised? LOL!
That was it for the day, in between all of this I’m desperately trying to finish a really good, whodunnit book.
So I’m off to make hotties for the kids, some tea for John and I, and then into bed with my book. Yay!!
Thanks for all popping in to share our day.
Lastly I have to tell you what I heard Juliette say to a friend of hers. This little girl was discussing the fact that we don’t have a tv, and Jules doesn’t have the latest Barbie doll. Juliette turned to her and with a look of peace and inner joy on her face said, “I’m homeschooled, what more could I ask for?”
If I was in any doubt about Homeschooling, there never will be again! Wow!
Have a brilliant Friday,Love S.xx
