BACK TO SCHOOL
Hi Everyone, We’re back!
We took last week off and it was so nice. I just rested. No work, no packing. I did very little and feel much better. Definitely needed some time out!
We got going with School at 8:30 this morning, it’s spring here and the sun is up and we’re up earlier so school starts earlier.
We did a bit of revision, of maths multiplication tables. We’ve been revising 1,2 and 3 times tables. Jules just needs to keep practising.
Then we had a quick maths test, a jumble of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. I wanted to see how Juliette is doing and whether she is ready for the Grade 4 curriculum next year. She scored a 33 out of 36! No help from me! I find it really important for me that I gives Jules small tests every now and again just to make sure we’re on track. I never tell her in advance and it’s treated as a normal worksheet, but without counting beads etc.
I went and had a (supposedly relaxing) quick cup of coffee while she was busy, and found a needle I’d lost last week. I sat on it! There’s a postive to everything you see! I found my missing needle.
Then Jules main lesson was teaching her the 4 points of the compass, being North East South and West. Her rhyme to remember it… Never Eat Slimy Worms. It worked she loved it and now is intent on watching the sun and spotting where in the sky it is!
We did a fun exercise of moving 1 step east then 5 steps North and so on, she got the concept really quickly, the moving around in the right directions definitely made the lesson more fun and interesting. I’d tell her move 2 steps South and off she’d go. It works very well. Try it if you can.
Oh and we did Afrikaans again. I struggle with this it’s a second language but the text books are so boring! I try and make it exciting but fail dismally. I always know when I’m not performing to the kids expected standard. StJohn is the one that always tells me, “Mom, you’re being boring today!” Thank Heavens it’s only happened 3 times since the beginning of the year! (I think I’m allowed to be boring once in a while).
That was it, I’ve been preparing lessons for next week while Jules has been busy and have some really cool ideas, we’re learning about the different continents and the countries on them next week. I’ll keep you informed! I have plans for DVD’s, Travel Brochures, Online resources and odd meals like Japanese food and Spanish food etc. We’re really going to get stuck into it!
Have a great week, and love every minute of it. Time with our kids goes so fast, let’s use every second! I’m off to take them swimming now! Where I get to read my new book, A New Earth, and dream.
Blessings,
Susan.
