A Happy Homeschool Day!

Well another peaceful, joyfilled day winds to a close. StJ is asleep, tucked up with his Teddybear hotwater bottle. Jules is curled up, nearly asleep with Poppy the cat and her Teddybear hotwater bottle. It’s quite cold here in Johannesburg tonight. Definitely a heater and fluffy blanket night!

Homeschooling today went so well! Firstly we started a bit later than usual, as it was really cold, we stayed in bed a bit longer. We then attempted school at the dining room table, where we do it each day. All 3 of us found it chilly and just not right. So we grabbed our books and the blackboard, and moved into the lounge on the floor in front of the fire. You see this is another joy of homeschooling. You can take it anywhere!

StJohn was busy with a workbook that prepares him for Grade 1. He did some number recognition, and match up rhyming words, and then he drew all sorts of sleeping cats. I think he was inspired by our 2 cats, Ruby and Poppy, jostling for position in front of the fire! Ruby andPoppy homeschool with us every day, either at the table or in front of the fire. And Alexandra our dog curls up next to us as well!

Juliette was concentrating well this morning, and we more than made up for yesterday’s debacle! I taught her Phonics, today it was, the long oo sound, as in chew, fruit, moon, blue etc. To do this I wrote a word for each spelling on the blackboard and drew a picture next to it. This will stay up for 3 days. As we’ll being do a list of words each day. For example, tomorrow we’ll be doing all words spelt with ew on the end, like threw. Anyway back to today. I put a worksheet together for her of 25 words all mixed. They all have the long oo sound, but are spelt differently. She then groups them together, so all the ew words go in 1 column, all the ui words in another, etc. Then she draws pics of a few of them to decorate the page.

This completed she practiced her Multiplication tables. From 1 to 6. Tomorrow we’ll do 7 to 14. To make this easy I’ve made up a set of wipe clean times table sheets, that she just has to slot the answer into. They’ve been fantastic, as she is able to practise over and over again, without having to use up reams of paper!

They both took a break at this point, while I got our Second Language workbook ready. Juliette is learning Afrikaans this year, and as StJohn sits with us while we do it, he’s now chattering away in Afrikaans! Amazing how languages are absorbed so easily. Today we did the sentences, starting with I see a…..Being “Ek sien ‘n …” She smoothly fitted in all the Afrikaans words without skipping a beat.

Then it was time for a quick lunch before their friends arrived to play. 3 Of them popped in today. It took them all for a walk to the park where they sent half an hour playing Hide and Seek. Then we came home and they set up a Hairdressers Shop. StJohn seemed to have a huge amount of fun, as the girls gave him a distinctly Elvis hairdo!(He got off lightly they love painting his nails usually!)
And that was our day, no conflict, just peace and happiness. I’m now off to draw a simple diagram of the human digestive system for tomorrows Biology lesson. Wish me luck. Oh and I have to glue Action mans arm back on. It appears to have burst in half?! Then it’s off to bed, and I’ve promised John a footrub, as he’s exhausted at the moment and needs some TLC.

Thanks for popping in to share our day with us. May your day tomorrow be filled with peace and calm.

Unitl tomorrow…Love, S.xx

PS. The bean experiment is still intact, no change as yet. But they’re all still in their bowls. Which is a miracle in this house!
