THE TRUTH ABOUT HOMESCHOOLING

Okay I just re-read my last post and think I may have given you the wrong impression. Today was focused and Idyllic, this is not so everyday, in fact this is rare, that’s why I mentioned it!

I promised when I started this blog to let you know the truth about Homeschooling on a daily basis. Well, let’s take Friday for example…..

We’re trying to build a house at the moment, we are generally on a shoe string budget, at the moment the house is about to be built on someone elses’ shoe string! We have limited means, and want to pay cash and not take a loan! This puts pressure on me, as I’ve taken responsibilty for the research and development part of the project, Johns working hard to earn money to get the project off the ground! We have the ground, now we need a dwelling of some sort!

So anyway, on Friday, I ask the children, pleeeeeaaase be good while Mommy talks to the Architect. I needed money saving ideas and needed help with certain specifications. Important stuff when planning a house, can be the difference between R2 000 and

R20 000.
They promise me they’ll be great, quiet and all that….

I’m not even half way into the conversation, with the busy important man:), when my little darlings start a fight in the passage, I can see them, both busy man and I can hear them, but I can’t reach them, I stop I say, both of you stop it right now. They look at me, I carry on talking, assured that they will stop. They don’t… they go ballistic. The busy man is getting irritated, I’m getting stressed! I pick up the closest thing to hand. A banana out of the fruit bowl and hurl it down the passage. I swear on my life, I threw a Banana!!! I never smack my kids, I try not to raise my voice, we do our best to have a Non-Violent Household. But I threw a banana up into the air, narrowly missing the light fitting!

This does not have the desired effect. I mean in all seriousness why would it. What would you do if someone threw a banana over your head???? They start shrieking with delight and tossing the damn banana from one to the other. In the end I had to just finish off the call another day. Now that this man thinks I have children that are demons and he’s dealing with a mental Mama!
I was cross at the time, and sat the kids down and had long discussions about my needs and their needs, etc etc.

But looking back on it, it was absolutely hysterically funny. So no, Homeschooling is not always serious, a lot of the time, it’s crazy and out of control and disgustingly fun. But my kids are doing great academically and emotionally, so I guess it’s working for us!
