GRADE 3 MEASURING
Today Juliette was introduced to measurements, centrimetres, and metres. Again I’m a great fan of Practical Homeschooling. So I cut a piece of ribbon for her and after explaining the idea behind measurements being the same everywhere so that we all know whats what. (She understand there are 2 different measuring systems, but we’re dealing with cm and mtrs!)
She then had to go around the house measuring first we did fruit, an orange, an apple and a banana (practising spelling as we go!) she got the concept of measuring, as she then took her ribbon, and measured it against the ruler. And then she wrote it all down on a sheet of paper.
Then we quietly slipped in the 1/2 cm. She now wants to know about fractions, great that’s what we’ll tackle tomorrow! I’ve introduced them before and she understand 2 halves, 4 quarters but wasn’t really interested, now that she’s seen there is a practical use for them she’s keen to know more. Yippee!
Learning happens so easily when there is fun involved! She measured the cats tail, the dogs paw (the dog tried to eat the ribbon, so we needed a new one!), the candles, her brothers head, her teddy’s head – apparently to see who had the bigger brain. StJohn was unimpressed, apparently Juliette should know he’s cleverer then the teddy!
This was Juliette’s main lesson today, then we did phonics, a wordsearch puzzle, again practised dividing by 3 – New Worksheet loaded yesterday!, and again played the division board game. On the board game note, I’m putting together a multiplication board game now. It really is fun to be able to play games and do school at the same time. If only my education had been this much fun!
Now I’m off to help Jules with some finger knitting and then I need lunch, I made for everyone else and forgot mine!
Have a chilled Monday afternoon!
Blessings
Susan
