HOMESCHOOL MATHS GAMES
Hi Everyone,
If you visit regularly you’ll know I’ve been teaching Juliette the concept of Maths Division, the Waldorf Way. Well we played shopkeeper, and she got the concept fantastically. But you can only play shop shop so many times and it gets a tad boring for her and me!
I gave it some thought last night, how do I practise division with her without using piles of worksheets or written sums? It hit me: a board game, but how? We can practise counting for Grade 1 nicely with snakes and ladders, but division?
Well I put my mind to it, and it’s worked, we’ve been playing for most of the day! In fact I had to do a few website related things and couldn’t keep playing, so Jules got her Teddy out and threw the dice for both of them! Boy is she practising her division!
Basically you take any old dice and change the numbers using stickers and then practise your dividing by 2 or 3 or 5 whatever. Each dice is different. You throw the dice, get a number say 8. You then need to divide 8 by 2 to get 4. Then you get to move 4 places. Clever hey? I know it sounds complicated but it isn’t, you just need the instructions and the right dice!
Well I’ve put the instructions for making the dice and the full instructions for any board game into a download on the Free Maths Worksheets page. Please download it, it’s free and I really want to share this with you. I promise, you’ll love it, and so will the kids.
How often is it that we can play games and know that we’re Homeschooling at the same time. Without our kids picking up on a “fake” game?
It’s also nice because the whole family can play, Juliette and I use the division dice, and when it’s StJohns turn he uses the normal dice. It works fantastically!
Hope you enjoy your gift, have fun!
And have a great Weekend!
Blessings as always,
Susan
