HOMESCHOOL GRADE 1 THE WALDORF WAY
Hi Everyone
Today was Bakers Day! This morning after we had all woken and I had my first cup of much needed coffee in my hand, I asked the children as usual to please get dressed. I was met with the usual,”no, can’t it be a pajama day?” All I said was, “but it’s bakers day today.”
They let out a yell and were dressed and well groomed within a few minutes! Yay Bakers Day!
Juliette was still practising her maths division. She also did some more Grade 3 phonics, the or sound, aw,au and or. She’s almost finished her english for the year. That’s the brilliant thing about Homeschooling for me. You don’t have to force subjects, they can happen in their own time. For the remainder of the year we can concentrate on Maths. She’s ready now.
StJohn did his last day of Waldorf Grade 1 letter K. Tomorrow is a new letter. To finish off the K letter for him, using our Practical Homeschool techniques, he drew it again, he heard the story again. Then he drew the letter on a huge piece of paper with his toes.
I love teaching Grade 1 letters the Waldorf way. I’ve seen children taught in many different ways and the Waldorf way definitely is the most effective as far as I can see. It teaches the alphabet as if it were part of the child and his environment. I’ve found a beautiful, yet practical book,Waldorf Alphabet Book.If you’re even considering teaching your Kindergarten or Grade 1 child their alphabet, this book is a must! My kids absolutely loved their Grade 1 time. Juliette’s enjoying it all over again as she listens to StJohn hearing the stories for the first time.
We did Bakers Day, mainly for him today. We made cupcakes and he iced them with sweeties. All the icing was in the shape of a K. Which StJohn did on his own.
Juliette’s educational part of bakers day, was weighing in Grams, measuring in millilitres. I also “lost” a measuring cup, so she had to make up 60ml of milk out of a 50ml cup and 2 x 5ml teaspoons. She did it brilliantly and loved it as she worked it out.
Talk about making school fun!
Juliette asked me today why we couldn’t do school in the afternoons as well, because it’s such fun. Only Homeschool right?
StJohn’s cool quote of the day, we were having a short walk and I’d told him to be careful of the road as the cars drive fast inside our estate. He said to me, “Ooh yes, I don’t want to get squashed like a pancake, I love my life!”
To me that says we’re doing something so right. He is happy and loving his life. What more could a Homeschool Mom ask for?
Blessings to you all as you Homeschool,
Susan
