FIRST HOMESCHOOL GEOGRAPHY LESSON
Today was a very exciting day for us. Juliette had her first Geography lesson. She had to learn about South Africa, and it’s 9 provinces This is how we did it. First we went to our ever popular Online Homeschool Resources, today it happened to be Google Earth. We viewed our planet from a distance and then zoomed in on SA. Both kids were so excited when the earth began to spin! Then we had a close up look at South Africa, as Google was able to show us the province borders. It was fantastic. This is the closest to Practical Homeschooling that I could get with this subject.
After that I gave them each a map of South Africa and it’s province borders, and a list of the provinces, Jules then had to much them up. (Sin just colour in happily!Happens to be the most colourful map in the world, I’m sure) They were already on our Blackboard, so it was a matter of copying and matching. Then we coloured each province a different colour and wrote all the province names under the map in their matching colours. Jules loved her lesson today, and so did I.
Then we had to finish the long ooo sound in Phonics. Today it was ue, we did this with the help of a worksheet or 2. And then we were done, it took quite a while, I know we were busy with Geography for at least an hour. But their concentration was superb. I can always see when they aren’t in the mood or bored. Today they were fully into it! Thanks to Google Earth being used as an Online Homeschool Resource! LOL.
This afternoon we went for a long walk with a friend of theirs, to make leaf snakes. To do this we threaded a wool needle with a 75cm length of wool. Then we made a big looping knot at the end, and then walked around threading beautiful winter leafs.
Then we came home, coloured in a picture of a snowflake, they wrote the word winter underneath and threaded this on the top of the leaves. Now we have leaf snakes draped around the lounge. It was so much fun, and a brilliant way for the children to learn the seasons. Practical Homeschooling at it’s finest! Not to mention their co-ordination being improved as they thread!
Now I’m off to bath them, and then we’ll sit down to dinner, Dad should be home in about 20 minutes!Yay!
Have a brilliant day tomorrow, and pay as much love forward as you can!
Blessings, Susan
