Practical Homeschooling - The Taste Test
Hi Everyone, Well we are back to Homeschooling with a bang today.
Jules continued her phonics, being the long ooo sound, today we did, u in the middle with the sleeping e on the end. The way I’ve been teaching the sleeping e, is like this, “never sound the e, we don’t want to wake her up.”
It’s worked like a charm, it always brings a giggle out of the kids, and the silent e is never uttered! Jules did a wordsearch puzzle, just finding words with this specific long ooooo sound.
Then we did a bit of maths, number patterns today, and working out a code. This is fun, you take each of the letters of the alphabet and number it, normally a = 1, b = 2. But we’ve moved past that a bit, now we use our times tables. Jules always draws it up for us, I start her off with a,b and c, then she’s off. Today we did the 3 times table again, a = 3, b = 6, c = 9 and so on. I make up a sentence before hand with just the numbers under each letter. Jules has to fill in the correct letter. Then she can read the message that I’ve made for her. There is always great excitement, to see what comes out at the end of the message. The times tables justget absorbed so easily…
Then we took a short break, I needed a shot of caffeine at this point. (Oh, I bought some coffee substitue over the weekend, tried it today, yuck! Give me espresso anyday! On days when I’m exhausted I need a wake-up cup! And there’ve been a lot of those recently!)
After the coffee had kicked in we started our Practical Homeschooling part of the day. Today it was using the sense of taste. At the Grade 3 stage, kids need to be able to tell the difference between, bitter, sour, sweet, salty etc. Her worksheet had a list of foods, on it, from vinegar and lemons, to cake and coffee! Jules had to list them into their correct columns. So instead of trying to remember the taste, I dished up small portions of everything. Both Jules and Sin enjoyed themselves, they really loved the taste of the vinegar, of all things. They had great fun discussing whether the vinegar was bitter or sour!
That was it our day finished. We tidied up, they ran out to play and I started making lunch. We had a quick walk and visit to the playground, where they met a new friend and she came home with us. (It’s those poor socialistaion skills rearing their heads again!LOL)
They weren’t home long before they hit on the idea of mudpie making. Fine no problem with me, then they went that 1 step too far, a Mudpie fight. So I let them carry on for 20 minutes or so, then went out feigned shock, brought them in to have a bath, clothes needed washing and I had to hose off the walls of the house and the patio!
Well that’s all the fun of choosing Homeschooling as a lifestyle . I would do it all over again, flying mudpies and all!
Enjoy your evening, have a loving Homeschool day tomorrow.
Love, Susan.xx
